Traduzione italiana, a cura di Luigi e Camillo Golia, sulla settima edizione dell’opera inglese di James Johnson dal titolo “An essay on morbid sensibility of the stomach and bowels. An essay on indigestion” uscita nel 1827 e molte volte ristampata. L’A. istituiva un nesso di causa ed effetto fra la patologia dello stomaco e dell’intestino sensibile, con difficoltà di digestione, alla irritabilità nervosa, alla depressione o alla sindrome ipocondriaca. In fine è aggiunto un foglio a stampa, datato 7 aprile 1836, con il parere positivo del Revisore Giuseppangelo del Forno alla pubblicazione dell’opera. “The former naval physician James Johnson in 1827 would also focus his discussion of the nervous distempers on the gut, entitling his rapidly-selling study An Essay on Morbid Sensibility… Johnson wrote that ‘a morbid sensibility of the nerves of the stomach and the bowels, with or without the usual symptoms of disordered digestion, was the leading feature of the disease, and the cause of the varied and endless train of symptoms which develop themselves in the mind and in distant parts of the body” (“Framing and Imagining Disease in Cultural History”, 2003, p. 240).
