Not only did he bring English thought to the attention of the French; he also published French writers such as Racine and works of his own such as L’Histoire du Prince de Condé (1693) and introduced Montaigne, La Bruyere and La Fontaine to England. Translators like Coste and his contemporaries (Jean Le Clerc, Daniel Mazel and Pierre Desmoizeaux) were important links in the chain of French- English ex-changes, sparking new political, moral and social debates and providing sources of inspiration for the Encyclopedists and economists” (J.
